Manteo, NC

Prelude                                                                 Christine Daniels

Greetings! Peace be unto you members and friends of Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church in beautiful Manteo, NC of the Outer Banks. Where our mission is “Equipping the saints for the Work of Ministry.” May you find a blessing in our lesson this morning on this Seventh Sunday of Easter.

Call to Worship

We have gathered–new followers and lifelong disciples, the powerful and the powerless, those who have too little and those who have too much.

We have gathered, for we are one in Christ.

We have come–seekers and skeptics, sinners and saints, the poor in spirit and the rich in faith.

We have come, for we are eager to hear God’s word.

We are here, together.
Let us glorify the one true God.

Opening Prayer

Redeeming God, you call us to be one with you, as you are one with Christ. As Christ’s love casts out our fear, and changes it to love, unite us by your Spirit of peace, that we may be one with you, as you are one with Christ. Amen.

Call to Confession

Friends, God not only desires our repentance, but wants to offer us forgiveness. Therefore, cast all your worry on God. Let us confess our sins before God and one another.

Prayer of Confession

Lord Jesus, you long for us to be one, just as you and the Father are one. But we gravitate toward those who think like us, behave like us, pray like us, because it is easier than looking beyond difference to discover what is good and kind and faithful in those, we call the other. Even in our houses of worship, we are slow to reach across the aisle to embrace friends in faith with whom we hold little in common. Forgive us, we pray. Wash us in the waters of our baptism, so that, with one mind, we might continue the work you gave us to do. Amen.

Please take time for silent confession so that the sins of your heart will be forgiven also.

Assurance of Pardon

Hear the good news of God’s promise: I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven and be at peace!

Thanks be to God.

Prayer of Illumination

Spirit of Glory, Spirit of God, bless us with a word of life this day. Send down your Spirit of wisdom to bless us with a word of life this day to restore, support, and strengthen us as we seek to be one with you. Amen.

Scripture Reading – John 17:1–11(Common English Bible)

1 When Jesus finished saying these things, he looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, so that the Son can glorify you. 2 You gave him authority over everyone so that he could give eternal life to everyone you gave him. 3 This is eternal life: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you sent. 4 I have glorified you on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 Now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I shared with you before the world was created. 6 “I have revealed your name to the people you gave me from this world. They were yours and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 This is because I gave them the words that you gave me, and they received them. They truly understood that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.9 “I’m praying for them. I’m not praying for the world but for those you gave me, because they are yours. 10 Everything that is mine is yours and everything that is yours is mine; I have been glorified in them. 11 I’m no longer in the world, but they are in the world, even as I’m coming to you. Holy Father, watch over them in your name, the name you gave me, that they will be one just as we are one.

Affirmation of Faith

New life in Christ takes shape in a community in which people know that God loves and accepts them in spite of what they are. They therefore accept themselves and love others, knowing that no one has any ground on which to stand except God’s grace. Adapted from the Confession of 1967, 9.22

Prayers of Intercession

Let us unite our hearts in prayer saying, God of resurrection, hear our prayer.
Redeeming God, you call us to devote ourselves constantly to prayer for the sake of Jesus Christ. Fill us with your Spirit’s power that we may be one with Christ, as Christ is one with you.
Help us to support the health of your human family and the welfare of your world.
Help us to grow in strength and courage to witness to hope in Christ Jesus.
Help us to find sustainable solutions to relieve parched crops and a thirsty land as we seek to honor and care for the well-being of your creation.
Loving God, you heard the sufferings of your people, listened to our cries, and sent a Son into our world that was no stranger to our pain. Help us to offer your healing and compassion as we minister to others in the mercy of your Christ.
Bless and comfort our sick and shut-in and those who grieve the deaths of family members. Give us strength and courage to love and pray for our enemies as well as our congregation.
We remember before you all who have died, and pray for all who will die today, that they may know your peace. Bless us with the gift of faith, that we may know you and love you, and enjoy life eternal shared with you, in Jesus the Christ who taught us to say when praying, “Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Invitation to Offering
Jesus said to the Father, All mine are yours, and all yours are mine. Therefore, let us offer to God this day our lives and labors in service of Christ’s love. John 17:10

Prayers of Dedication
Glorious God, everything that is given to us rains forth out of the abundance of your love, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Bless these gifts and our lives together that all we are and all we offer give glory to you; in the name of Christ, who is the way, truth and life. Amen.

Friends, go forth in Jesus’ name, remembering his new commandment to love one another, just as he has loved us. Amen.
1 John 3:23

May the abundance of God bless you, the strength of Christ keep you, and the Spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, shine upon you forever. Let all God’s children say in unity, “Alleluia!”

Go Now in Peace

Go now in peace, never be afraid,

God will go with you each hour of every day.

Go now in faith, steadfast, strong and true,

Know He will guide you in all you do.

Go now in love and show you believe,

Reach out to others so all the world can see.

God will be there, watching from above.

Go now in peace, in faith and in love.
